This Journey follows the same path as the Bay to Beach tour but with the addition of nature’s amazing sunset light show. We start off with some basic training and gliding around on the grass at Matiatia Bay to get to grips with the Segways. Once everyone is feeling confident with their new skills we head into the bush to wind our way through native Knoffler flowers, Flax plants and shaded areas covered with the famous NZ ferns.
We zip up the hill, past some of the tasty grape vines, to the summit of Atawai Whenua Reserve where we do a bit of gliding round the hillside and gently make our way through the back streets of Oneroa Village down to Blackpool beach. A few winding streets eventually lead us to the beach where we can test our ‘off road’ skills and skirt around the coastline, if the tides allow. While we’re here we’ll check out the old Scow shipwreck ‘Rahiri’ (c.1907), stop to have a look at the Piritahi Marae (Māori people see their marae as tūrangawaewae – their place to stand and belong) and take some more photos before we head off around the stunning headlands to Surfdale.
We now start to make our way back up the hill to the romantic Mudbrick Vineyard and the magnificent Cable Bay Vineyard. At Cable Bay we can whizz through the olive trees and vines where one of the best wine producers in the world brings to life the fruit vital to their hand-crafted wines. We can pause here for some Segway selfies and a group photo on top of the hill with the Vineyard, gorgeous coastline, Auckland, the ocean and of course that amazing sunset. Following the sunset, we visit the romantic Mudbrick Vineyard renowned for their amazing food and striking views. Mudbrick is a favourite with visitors and those who ‘tie the knot’ on the Island.
By now the sun will be on its way to bed as it crawls over the Auckland landscape with the Waitakere Ranges in the background. Mudbrick or Cable Bay can also be your final stop of the Journey for those who wish to indulge in the delicacies from the kitchens of either Vineyard. Stay for a while and enjoy amazing food and perhaps a wine or two (please note: if you are thinking of staying for some dinner please email me to let me know, after you have made your booking, and I will organise a reservation at either Cable Bay or Mudbrick for you).
Alternatively, you can choose to continue back down to Matiatia Ferry Terminal where you can catch your ferry home or collect your car to continue your journey.
